The Town Walls were built to protect the city against invasions, sieges and enemies raids over two thousand years, continuously modified through elevations, renovations, expansions, reinforcements, modifications and demolitions, too. The part of the urban Walls exposed to the maximum risk is located on the slopes of Ingino Mountain in N/NE direction and were built before 1302. Nowadays, the area is mostly interested by olive plantations, while in the past was also used by wood-cutters and farmers. The area inside the Walls was used as military bastions (such as the “Cassero”) until the XVI Century, after which it has been mostly used for farming uses.
